For Robert and Charlotte Ham of Macon, Georgia
Visit Prayer Page Home Monday, Sept. 22, 2008 from Connie (Ham) Ellison of Big Sandy, Texas:
My parents [Robert and Charlotte Ham of northern Georgia] and brother [Bobby] were in a car wreck today and my brother was killed instantly. Both of my parents are in the Surgical Trauma ICU unit in Macon, Georgia which is a little over 2 hours from home.
Mother has the worst injuries and will require multiple operations over the next few weeks. She has a broken femur and pelvic disk and other fractures. Some of the bone is missing in her femur, so she will have to undergo bone grafts. They said she will not walk for walk for 3-4 months. They are worried about damage to her liver and spleen, and she’s at high risk of developing an infection due to open injury to her hip. She went into surgery around 6:00 central time, and is not out yet.
Daddy has a broken shoulder bone and crushed disks in his neck. They took him a little ago for a full body MRI, but I don’t have any results yet.
Robin and I are flying out in the morning to make funeral arrangements.
Both my parents were not in good health to begin with, and my poor mother was near exhaustion when we left [a family visit] Saturday night.
I thank you in advance for your prayers.
Connie
9-23-08 update from daughter Connie Ellison
Robin [Rothe, sister, of Bloomington, Ind.] and I were able to spend most of the afternoon going between our parents rooms. They are both still in the Surgical Trauma ICU.
Mother was in surgery from 7:00 last night until 2:30 this morning basically to just clean out asphalt and dirt to prevent infection. Tomorrow she is scheduled what will be the first of several operations and we were told it will be a really rough day for her. They plan to graft bone, insert metal etc in her hip. She is and has always been an incredible woman.
Daddy is not doing well and is definitely not a model patient. They don’t feel that he’s strong enough to undergo surgery to set it due to an artery near the heart suffering trauma. He is not breathing deeply due to cracked ribs so has oxygen which he continually pulls off. I happened to stop in his room and the end of the second visiting session and he had almost succeeded in getting out of the bed which caused him to be in even more pain. He has no idea where he is, and even when you tell him forgets before you finish telling him. They are concerned that he did damage to his shoulder and plan to give him another cat scan tonight.
Robin and I will make funeral arrangements for Bobby in the morning, deal with insurance companies and then head back to the hospital which is over 2 hours away. We’ve decided to stay at a hotel near the hospital until the visitation.
We have received hundreds of e-mails so please tell everyone that each of them mean so much to us, and we are sorry that we don’t have the time to answer them all. It’s midnight here and we’re about 20 miles from home.
[We will make] funeral arrangements sometime tomorrow.
